Guidelines for CRCHS Website Poetry

Poetry submitted for posting on the Columbia River Cowboy Heritage Society website will be screened for appropriateness by designated members of the organization using the guidelines on this page. Also, if you are new to this site, we suggest that you review the articles at the following links for helpful information: Writing Cowboy Poetry, No Excuse for Lazy Poets, and Learning about Rhythm.
  1. In keeping with the purpose of CRCHS to remember, preserve and celebrate our western and cowboy heritage, poetry should be developed in the contemporary or historical setting of western/cowboy/ranch/rural life.

  2. Because poetry is the personal expression of thoughts and emotions of the author and/or his description of happenings, only submissions by the author, himself, will be considered for website posting. All poetry remains the exclusive property of the author.

  3. Poetry must be acceptable for family viewing and contain no vulgarity, profanity, obscenity, or material alluding to sexual activity.

  4. Acknowledging that poetry is a means of self expression, CRCHS will not publish material that maliciously attacks or demeans any person or group.

  5. Traditional cowboy poetry is characterized by regular meter and strong rhyme. All material will be screened, but that bordering on prose and randomness with respect to meter and rhyme, will not be posted.

  6. When a submitted poem is rejected for posting on the CRCHS website, the sender will be notified and given a brief explanation of the reason. If he chooses, he may modify/edit the material and resubmit it for consideration.

  7. If your poem is accepted for posting, it will remain on the website for an extended period of time but may eventually be removed due to space considerations.

If you have read this far, you probably have an interest in writing cowboy poetry. If you have an interest in it, you can probably develop your gift for penning poetry that remembers, preserves, and celebrates our western and cowboy heritage. Cowboy/girl - up with your pencil and paper now!!

Check out 'EVENTS" on our CRCHS.org website for the regular meetings and know that you are welcome to visit us where you can listen to us read/recite cowboy poetry and share what you've written.
